Ruben (Riz Ahmed) and Lou (Olivia Cooke) live together, travelling gig to gig playing their loud, frenzied music. Suddenly Ruben, a passionate drummer, loses his hearing and his world is upended, causing him to struggle with depression and be tempted by past addictions.
American director, screenwriter and editor Darius Marder (co-writer of The Place Beyond the Pines) uses innovative sound design to create a powerful soundscape of scrapes and muffles that give you a real sense of Ruben’s sonic experience and interior world; including his utter panic as he is jolted into a new, quieter way of being.
Each screening will feature an introduction from Riz Ahmed and will be shown with open captions to signify the importance of access for the communities whose stories are being told.
